Two races of Little Ringed Plover occur in our area. The Indian race jerdoni is a fairly common and widespread breeding resident.  It is difficult to distinguish from the wintering race curonicus that comes from Central Asia. The resident race has a shorter bill and wings and in full breeding plumage shows more obvious yellow eye rings and more white on the forehead. Little Ringed Plovers like bare or sparsely vegetated mud, usually near water, although when on passage they often occur on dry flats and even fallow fields. They feed in a typical plover fashion by running and stopping to peck insects from the ground. They neither wade in water nor probe mud with their bills.

Since they rarely occur in anything more than small parties, and then usually rather spaced out, they can be difficult to pick out unless their plaintive call is heard. Resident pairs occur widely and most village ponds with enough bordering mud are likely to have a pair or two. Passage birds, which can occur in flocks up to 50, are more likely to be along the Ganga or on the edges of the larger wetlands. Peak numbers occur in September and April while in winter it is unusual to find more than 20 at any site. Resident birds breed immediately before the monsoon and a favoured site is the sandbanks of the Ganga.
