The Yellow-wattled Lapwing is a scarce breeding resident in our area. It is endemic to the Indian sub-continent. It favours dry, flat, sandy ground with minimal vegetation, sometimes occupying heavily grazed or mown fields, including parks. In urban areas such habitats are rapidly being built over and in rural areas they are increasingly being turned to agriculture. Both recent changes have undoubtedly made the birds more local. Yellow-wattled Lapwings are rather quiet and unobtrusive compared to their very obvious relatives, the Red-wattled. They prefer to run or slink away, even from eggs or small young and rarely mob intruders. They may therefore be more prone to predation than their aggressive relatives. They tend to occur in scattered pairs although up to eight pairs being recorded nesting in quite close proximity. There is some local movement as breeding pairs often turn up at favoured sites in February and complete their breeding by June before the monsoon arrives, only to disappear again.  Although not so catholic in their choice of habitat, they often nest in close proximity to the larger Red-wattled Lapwings
